About Travis Stewart

Travis Stewart grew up in Clovis, California. His art and all of his Western/Horse themes come straight from the heart. Travis was introduced to horses at a young age, through his father and his involvement with the Clovis Rodeo Association. Travis had an interest in drawing as a young boy and often would sketch horses, baseball players, and other items that captivated his eye. Even though Travis was developing as a talented artist, his interest in horses grew much stronger and his art took a back seat for the time being.
In pursuit of becoming a better horseman, Travis took a job guiding pack trips at the High Sierra Pack Station. Spending the summer months with horses, mules and influential people fueled his passion to make horses an ever-growing part of his life. The experiences at the pack station taught him the basics of caring for livestock and ultimately became the catalyst in driving him to become a better horseman.
After graduating high school, Travis was accepted to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. During this time Travis was able to get his name and resume out into the horse industry. Not long after graduating, Travis was given the opportunity to work for several of the top trainers in the Reined Cow Horse industry. Legends such as Don Murphy, Ron Ralls, and Todd Bergen have been especially influential in guiding him to becoming a better horse trainer.
After spending time under the tutelage of these trainers and seeking new opportunities, Travis took a job with the Black Rock Ranch of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. Travis spent time working with Grant Setnicka who helped him develop a better sense of horses, livestock and business. During his time at Black Rock Ranch Travis also learned a great deal from one of his greatest mentors, Marshall Chesrown.
In spring 2010, Travis underwent surgery after an accident with a 2-year-old filly that kept him from riding. Forced to sit around while his injury healed, he picked up his pencil once again. Hesitant to see if he still had his artistic abilities, he began drawing and was surprised to find that his hand and eye were working together and that his skills had somehow matured. The growth that Travis went through gave him a greater understanding and appreciation for the horse and is believed to be part of the reason he was able to return to his artwork so easily.
Travis hopes that he can capture his audience with something unique and moving. He hopes his drawings tell not just his story, but that others who appreciate horses can find their stories in his drawings as well.
Inspiration for Travis has come from various others like: Charles Russell, Will James, and even Norman Rockwell. Most Influential, Robert “Shoofly” Shufelt. He feels that Shoofly has completely mastered the skill of using the most unforgiving medium, the pencil. Someday, Travis hopes he can have the same impact on his viewers.
Travis currently resides in Burleson, Texas along with his wife Kolby and two children. Here he continues to train and show horses, as well as pursue his goals as a, "Western Artist". He plans to continue growing as an artist and sharing his heart-felt work with the world.
